Computer Port

Computer System are comes with some inbuilt ports to connected with other peripheral input - output devices, such as keyboards, mouse, joysticks, headphones, scanner, printer, etc.

Let’s learn about the computer Ports one by one.

  • PS/2 Ports
  • PS/2 Ports - It’s a 6-pin, low speed serial connector commonly used to connect a keyboard and mouse.

  • Video Graphics Array Ports
  • VGA Port – It’s stand for Video Graphics Array which is used to connect the Monitor to the Computer System. VGA offer the high resolution images. VGA requires a VGA monitor, or a monitor capable of accepting the analog output.

  • Parallel Ports
  • Parallel Port - Parallel port are used to connect with a Printers and other devices. Which are capable of receiving more than one bit at a time (that is, it receives several bits in parallel). Most modern printers are parallel now a day.

  • Ethernet Ports
  • Ethernet Port - It’s again a inbuilt port named as Ethernet port on most computers to connect it to a wired network. Ethernet ports are also found on all popular broadband routers.

  • Universal Serial bus Ports
  • USB Port - USB port stand for Universal Serial Bus, it’s a protocol for transferring data between digital devices. Many digital cameras and memory card readers connect to the USB port on a computer for transferring picture and videos.

USB card readers are typically faster than cameras or readers that connect to the serial port ( because in serial ports data is transfer bit by bit i.e. single bit is transfer at a time.), but slower than those that connect via FireWire which is an external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can be used to connect up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mouse, modems, and keyboards. USB also supports Plug-and-Play installation and hot plugging which is more user friendly.

  • Fire wire Ports
  • Fire wire IEEE Port - FireWire is a cabling technology for transferring data between two digital devices at high speeds. Some professional digital cameras and memory card readers connect to the computer over FireWire for data transportation. FireWire card readers are typically faster than USB transportation method.

FireWire was invented by Apple Computer, but is now commonly used with Windows-based PCs as well.

  • Audio Jack Ports
  • Audio Jack Port - Audio connectors are used to affix cables to other audio equipment, in order to providing them electronic signal. Connectors may be plugs, jacks, or combinations, and may have an integral switch.

Plug type audio connectors are a plug, or male, connector includes pins that can be inserted into a socket. Jack type audio connectors are a jack, or female, connector consists of sockets that are aligned to mesh with a pin-type connector. Combination plug and jack connectors are also available in most of the devices.
